Web app or mobile app? How to choose for your first version

It’s one of the first decisions in any product project, and it shapes the timeline, the budget and how fast you can change things. Here is how to decide.

Choose a web app when

The web is usually the faster, more flexible start:

  • People use it at work, on a laptop, or alongside other tools.
  • You want to launch fast and change things often without app store review.
  • You need one product that works on every device.
  • People find you through search, links or ads, and should be able to try it instantly.

Choose a native mobile app when

Go native when the phone is the product:

  • The product depends on the phone: camera, location in the background, Bluetooth, offline use.
  • Push notifications are central to how it works.
  • People will use it many times a day, and a home-screen icon matters.
  • Being in the App Store and Google Play is part of how customers find you.

The middle paths

A progressive web app can be installed on the home screen and work partly offline, without the app stores. Cross-platform frameworks such as React Native build iOS and Android apps from one codebase, which keeps the two in step.

Many products start as a web app, prove the idea, then add mobile apps once they know which features people use most.

Questions that settle it

Answer these and the choice usually makes itself:

  • Where will people be when they use it: at a desk or on the move?
  • Which phone features, if any, does the core flow need?
  • How quickly do you need to ship changes after launch?
  • How will new users find it the first time?

Common questions

Is a web app cheaper than a mobile app?
Usually, because one codebase serves every device and there is no app store process. Costs depend on scope, so Zecro prices in a written proposal after a discovery call.
Can a web app be turned into a mobile app later?
Yes. With a shared backend and a design that already works on small screens, adding iOS and Android apps later is a normal next step.
What is React Native?
A framework for building iOS and Android apps from one codebase, so both versions stay in step and are cheaper to maintain.
